The International Ice Hockey Federation have announced the schedule for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, which begins on August 9th in Edmonton.

As everyone knows by now, the 2022 World Juniors were cut short back in December following a COVID-19 outbreak among a few of the participating nations. Some games were forfeited, but in order to protect the integrity of the tournament, the IIHF decided to cancel the tournament and rescheduled it for August.

The tournament in August is starting from the beginning, meaning the results from the handful of games played in December don't count. Another change from the December tournament is that Russia is no longer participating due to their invasion of Ukraine. With Russia out, the IIHF replaced them with Latvia.

There also won't be any relegation at the August tournament, meaning all ten participating nations will return in December when the World Juniors head to Halifax and Moncton.

Let's take a look at the groups for the tournament before we jump into the schedule and some of the key games.

Group A: Canada, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia, Lativa.
Group B: United States, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Austria.

Czechia and Slovakia will kick off the tournament on August 9th at 12 p.m. local, followed by Latvia vs Finland at 4 p.m., with the United States and Germany capping off opening day at 8 p.m.

Among the big games in the preliminary round, the United States takes on Sweden on August 14th, while Canada battles Finland on August 15th.

The four quarter-final games will be played on August 17th, the semi-finals get underway on August 19th and the medal games are on August 20th. The Gold Medal Game will get underway at 6 p.m. local.
