The Washington Capitals' PR team announced that C Nicklas Backstrom underwent successful hip resurfacing surgery:

Backstrom had hip surgery seven years ago to the month, and this latest experience under the knife is reportedly related. Frank Servalli followed up the news with a brief explanation of what hip resurfacing actually is, and the players who have underwent this injury before & how it went after the fact:

Kesler & Jovanovski both had their respective careers end after resurfacing surgeries, so history is not on Backstrom's side. However, it is believed that it is his intention to return to the NHL, so making a determination either way is imprudent. As for the Capitals, they will most likely place Backstrom on long-term injured reserve. The extra $9.2 million would afford them plenty to seek a replacement, if anyone can, indeed, replace Nicklas Backstrom.
