In an interview with Tomas Prokop of Sport.SK, pending unrestricted free agent defenceman Andrej Sekera mentioned that he's likely leaning towards retirement this summer.

This season was a tough one for Sekera, who was with the Dallas Stars and only played in 32 games. A few days before the trade deadline, the Stars placed the veteran blueliner on waivers, but he cleared and remained with the big club for the remainder of the season.

"I thought we'd see two or three weeks now that I'd be at home with my family. But I am more inclined to say that my career is coming to an end," Sekera said.

He added, "I honestly haven't talked to the agent since I left the United States. I told him that if I wanted to, I would contact him and tell him if I would continue. It gives me peace for now, but I guess the closer we get to July 1, the more he'll want to know how I decided. But at the moment, I'm more inclined that my hockey career is at an end."

Sekera, 36, has spent the last sixteen seasons in the National Hockey League with Buffalo, Carolina, Los Angeles, Edmonton, and Dallas. In 842-career games, the Bojnice native had 253 points (51 goals, 202 assists), 212 penalty minutes and was a plus-twelve. Sekera appeared in the 2020 Stanley Cup Final with the Dallas Stars.

He was asked if the Stars wanted to keep him beyond this season, but Sekera said that the team was looking to give opportunities to younger players and he told general manager Jim Nill that he was going to move on.

"They told me the classic they wanted to give space to younger players, and that was it. I respect it. I told the general manager I didn't want to stay there. Nothing more. We shook hands, I thanked them for everything, and that was it."
