Dallas Stars' G Ben Bishop is being traded to the Buffalo Sabres in a move to shed salary cap for the Stars, per Kevin Weekes. Bishop suffered a torn meniscus during Dallas' 2019 second-round playoff series against the St. Louis Blues. He hasn't played in the NHL since undergoing surgery for the ailment in 2020. In one AHL game this season he surrendered 8 goals.

Per CapFriendly, Bishop has one year remaining on his contract with an AAV of $4,916,667; $3,500,000 in actual salary. Also per CF, the Sabres are about $19 million under the salary cap floor, meaning they need to spend that much by the start of the 2022-23 season or else they will incur a penalty.

Bishop's playing career is likely over, so this move will most likely result in assets going to Buffalo in exchange, however the terms have yet to be disclosed. Will update accordingly.

The move leaves the Dallas Stars with approximately $19 million in available salary cap space. Stars UFAs include G Scott Wedgewood, D John Klingberg & Andrej Sekera, & F Michael Raffl, Vladislav Namestnikov, and Alexander Radulov. Radulov has already signed in the KHL. More pressing is the Stars' RFAs who include star 22 year-old forward Jason Robertson, Marian Studenic, & G Jake Oettinger. Robertson & Oettinger will both likely command serious pay bumps, so the Stars' $19 million in available space will likely dissipate rather quickly.
