While there had been speculation it might happen, it still seemed shocking when it actually did. Bruce Cassidy was canned as head coach of the Boston Bruins after six year on Monday, a move GM Don Sweeney admitted many wouldn't like.

"It's going to be an unpopular decision, it's not going to resonate," said Sweeney at a news conference following his announcement that Cassidy was let go.

He's absolutely right. Many fans and analysts are questioning this decision, and for good reason. The Bruins' major issue the last decade or so has been drafting. More specifically, drafting the wrong players. And Cassidy had no say in those decisions at all.

Cassidy leaves the Bruins with an excellent regular season record of 245-108-46. He also led Boston to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019, ultimately losing to the St. Louis Blues. In 2021-22, Boston managed 107 points in the regular season despite dealing with several injuries.

Unfortunately for Cassidy, it seems like he took the fall for a very poor job of drafting and asset management by Sweeney. Many feel Cassidy will be back behind the bench in no time. Sweeney told reporters that Cassidy had not lost the room, but he felt a new voice was needed. As for how he felt about being fired, Sweeney admitted Cassidy was not happy.

The next Bruins head coach will come into a tough situation. It's already been announced that core members Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy will miss a major portion of next season. Matt Grzelcyk is also out five to six months. It will be interesting to see what Sweeney's next move is to ensure he doesn't end up where Cassidy is right now.
