After his retirement, Tim Peel has had a significant media presence, and it is clear he's interested in furthering his career even if he is done officiating in the NHL. He's been a guest on Spittin' Chiclets & The Pat McAfee Show, two massive sports podcasts, and he is quite active on Twitter. Recently, he shared that he is hosting a refereeing camp in St. Louis, Missouri.

While it won't be an area of focus in this article, the irony is not lost on me. That said, this is actually a really positive move for Peel after a less than ideal departure from his post. The longtime NHL Official has tons of insight on officiating at hockey's highest level, and the simple fact is there is a shortage of young refs. Mostly due to parents & players who make a part-time job a living hell sometimes, especially for young referees. Per a NY Times piece, youth officials saw a nearly 20% drop in enrollment since 2018, largely due to treatment of officials.

So having a veteran of the trade who's made a name for himself--one way or another--is a positive step in training the next generation of officials. The camp had a solid turnout, which is encouraging.

Back to the irony for a second. A referee who, on a hit mic, admitted to making calls that didn't exist so as to 'balance out' a game hosting a reffing camp is pretty funny. Not to mention Peel has somewhat of a...how do I say this politely...a certain hateable quality? I don't personally have any beef with him. But he definitely gets his fair share of online hate, so I think I'm onto something. Generally, however, it's good for the sport to have officials of the past training those of the present & future. And it is often said the NHL has the best officials in sports, which it may not seem like at times, but watch one NBA or MLB game & it will make sense.
