Before the 2021-22 season began, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that defenceman Jake Gardiner would miss the entire year and needed surgeries on his hip and back. The team would go on to place him on injured reserve.

The season prior, Gardiner was limited to only 26 games with Carolina due to injuries he had suffered.

During their season ending media availability, Hurricanes General Manager Don Waddell announced that Gardiner has been medically cleared and will be able to play hockey again.

Gardiner, 31, has spent parts of ten seasons in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes where he's put up 277 points (49 goals, 228 assists) in 645 career games.
