This award is presented to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season and who plays a leading role in his community growing the game of hockey.
Kopitar has served as the LA Kings captain since 2016-17 and is involved in many of the Kings' community programs including: Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Make a Wish Foundation, Wags and Walks, and Kings Care Foundation.
Kopitar also hosts a Hockey Academy every summer in his home country of Slovenia. His academy usually has over 200 kids from more than 15 countries each year.
Kopitar is now the second LA Kings player to win this award, joining his longtime teammate, Dustin Brown, as winners of the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
