After being eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Game 5 by the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, the discussion for the Calgary Flames moving forward is what will their roster look like next season?

Both Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau are without contracts for the 2022-23 season, although the former is a restricted free agent. As for Gaudreau, however, there have been plenty of rumors for some time now that he may wish to enter the free agent market in hopes of signing closer to home, with many suggesting either the Philadelphia Flyers or the New Jersey Devils. Speaking on the Jeff Marek Show on Friday morning, Elliotte Friedman said the Flames will likely have teams reaching out in the near future to see about acquiring the star wingers rights.

«I have no doubt teams, maybe not right away but over the next little while, will reach out and see if the Flames are interested in trading his rights if they don't think they can make a deal, but I still think that is a bit of time away,» Friedman said. «One thing about the Flames and Gaudreau is they really put a lot of this off, they didn't want to deal with it during the season, especially the player and I don't think there were a ton of conversations. Now we're going to sit down and find out where we really are.»

Gaudreau, 28, has been a part of the Flames organization since being selected in the fourth-round (104 overall) of the 2011 draft. He not only has 609 points in 602 career games but is coming off of his best season as an NHLer with 40 goals and 115 points. Whether a new deal is signed with the Flames remains to be seen, but the one guarantee is that he is going to get paid in a big way this summer.
