Day 11 at the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship was a big one, featuring two games with relegation to Division 1A for 2023 on the line, Kazakhstan vs Italy and Great Britain vs Austria.

In the first game of the day in Helsinki, Kazakhstan battled Italy. It was a close affair after the second period with the score 3-2, but the Kazakhs scored twice less than three minutes apart in the third to take a 5-2 lead and ultimately earn the victory. Kazakhstan will remain in the top division for 2023, while Italy is now relegated to Division 1A.

Kazakhstan's goals: Valeri Orekhov, Roman Starchenko, Nikita Mikhailis, Curtis Valk, Alikhan Asetov.
Italy's goals: Brandon McNally, Diego Kostner.

Over in Tampere, it was a battle of the third and fourth place teams in Group B, Czechia and the United States. Czechia netminder Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves to earn the shutout as his nation clinched their spot in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win.

Czechia's goal: Matej Blumel.

The final two games of Monday's schedule were close, including a massive upset.

Canada looked for their fifth win of the tournament as they took on Nikolaj Ehlers and Team Denmark, who before the game sat in the fourth and final playoff spot. Denmark scored twice in the opening frame to go up 2-0 and held on to defeat Canada for the first-time ever in their history by a score of 3-2. Canadian forward Max Comtois was ejected in the second period for a check to the head of Danish defenceman Oliver Larsen.

Denmark's goals: Markus Lauridsen, Mathias Bau, Peter Regin.
Canada's goals: Max Comtois, Ryan Graves.

It was a relegation battle in the final game of the day in Tampere between Great Britain and Austria. The British needed a regulation win to remain in the top group for 2023, while Austria needed a win in any fashion or an overtime/shootout loss to stay in the top group.

Great Britain led 2-0 after two periods, but the Austrians bounced back in a big way, scoring five goals in the third, winning the game by a score of 5-3.

Austria's goals: Peter Schneider, Thomas Raffl, Benjamin Nissner, Dominique Heinrich, Ali Wukovits.
Great Britain's goals: Robert Dowd, Cade Neilson, Matthew Myers.

Tomorrow is the twelfth and final day of the preliminary round and there is still plenty to play for with seeding for the quarter-finals still to be confirmed.
