2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship Day 9 Recap

Day 9 of the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship was a busy one with six games in total, three in Tampere and three in Helsinki.

In the early game in Helsinki, Danish netminder Sebastian Dahm made 19 saves for the shutout, while Frederik Storm and Markus Lauridsen both had a pair of assists as Denmark defeated France, 3-0.

Denmark's goals: Peter Regin, Joachim Blichfield, Julian Jakobsen.

Over in Tampere, a pair of Boston Bruins goaltenders went head-to-head as Linus Ullmark and Sweden battled Jeremy Swayman and the United States. Prior to the game, the pair kept their traditional hug going that they did in the NHL following a win with the Bruins.

The United States and Sweden battled right to the end as the game went to overtime tied 2-2. With less than 20 seconds remaining in the extra frame, American forward Adam Gaudette scored his second of the game to give his nation the victory.

In the second game of the day in Helsinki, it was a battle of the undefeated teams, Canada and Switzerland. Swiss forward Andres Ambuhl was honoured prior to puck drop for playing in his 120th career World Championship game, the most in IIHF history.

The teams played an exciting first period, which finished 3-3. Switzerland went on to score three straight after that including an empty netter from Timo Meier to seal the three points.

Switzerland's goals: Nico Hischier, Dean Kukan, Timo Meier, Pius Suter, Michael Fora, Jonas Siegenthaler.
Canada's goals: Adam Lowry, Kent Johnson, Drake Batherson.

The hosts Finland took on Austria in the second game of the day in Tampere with Nashville Predators forward Mikael Granlund scoring his third of the tournament. Finnish netminder Jussi Olkinuora made 19 saves to earn his third shutout of the tournament and second in as many days, as he led his nation to a 3-0 win.

Finland's goals: Valtteri Filppula, Mikael Granlund, Toni Rajala.

In the final game of the schedule in Helsinki, Slovakia looked to keep their hopes of a quarter-final spot alive as they took on Italy. 17-year-old Adam Sykora scored his first goal for the Slovak national team, which happened to be the game-winner as Slovakia won by a score of 3-1. Projected top-three pick in the 2022 draft, Juraj Slafkovsky, tallied a pair of assists.

Italy's goal: Alex Trivellato.

Meanwhile in Tampere, Czechia battle Norway as they took looked to further the gap in the standings. Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak scored twice and had an assist as they went on to win, 4-1.
