Sportsnet Insider Elliotte Friedman spoke during intermission of the Flames-Stars Game 3 over & mentioned a couple interesting trade scenarios. With the offseason approaching, it is only natural that the rumor mill begin churning at full speed once more.

Friedman notes that the Sharks' strategy of employing two Norris-calibre right-handed defensemen hasn't worked out as planned. As such, they're exploring the possibility of offing one, if not both, of Burns' & Karlsson's hefty contracts.

Additionally, Friedman mentioned that New Jersey is keen on Wild F Kevin Fiala, a restricted free-agent who will command a hefty price tag after a stellar year in Minnesota. Per CapFriendly, the Wild have ~$17M coming off the books this summer; add in the buyouts of Ryan Sutter & Zach Parise and the Wild only have about $9M worth of salary cap space after this season.

The Devils are open to trading their first-round pick this season, guaranteed top-7, possibly first overall (draft lottery Tuesday May 10). However, something tells me if they're picking top 5 they keep the pick. Time will tell, however.

Mark Scheifele's name was also mentioned. It's reported that, while the center did not request a trade, it is likely he will be dealt. A change of scenery is needed in Winnipeg, and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff believes Scheifele would command great value on the trade market.

We will continue to report the latest trade rumors over the offseason.
