Sanctions imposed on Russian businesses and businesspeople due to the war in Ukraine are having a major impact in the KHL it seems. Dynamo Moscow, one of the most successful teams in the Russian league, has been forced to get rid of three of its star players, all of them likely recognizable to fans of the NHL. Reports state the club can no longer afford to keep them.

Vadim Shipachyov, Slava Voynov, and Stanislav Galiev have all been sent to Ak Bars Kazan. The return, according to a report by AftonBladet.se, is the equivalent of about $10 USD. Not ten thousand or ten million, 10 dollars.

Shipachyov will be best known to North American hockey fans for his short stint in the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights. The forward was just the second person signed in the history of the team. His time in the NHL ended after he failed to report to the Golden Knights' AHL team. Shipachyov is among the best players to ever play in the KHL and is consistently at or near the top of the league for points every season.

Voynov, a defenceman, is more infamous than famous in North American hockey circles. A former 32nd overall pick of the LA Kings, Voynov was essentially booted from the league in 2014 after a domestic assault charge. He eventually pleaded to a reduced misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to 90 days in jail. Voynov returned to Russia to play and was instantly one of the best blueliners in the league. He attempted to get another contract in the NHL in 2020 but was unable to find any takers.

Galiev was a second round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2010. He managed just 26 games in the NHL before heading back home to continue his career. Last season, he notched 25 goals and 42 points in 47 games. He added another six goals in 11 games in the KHL playoffs before Dynamo Moscow was eliminated in the second round.

For a team to hand over these three players for what amounts to essentially nothing in the KHL is unheard of and a sure sign of the financial troubles some are facing due to sanctions over the war with Ukraine.
