With Russia being stripped of hosting duties for the 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship due to their invasion of Ukraine, a new country is needed to fill their role as hosts. It appears that the International Ice Hockey Federation has one country in mind, Canada.

During the 32 Thoughts segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet insider Jeff Marek mentioned that the IIHF has reached out to Hockey Canada to have them host the 2023 tournament, which is set to get underway on it's usual start date of December 26th.

"So the World Junior Hockey Championships, the U20. This summer, as we know in August being hosted by Canada, in Edmonton. Also, Hockey Canada has its hands full with the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, that's in early August, as well. And the IIHF, as they try to find a new home for the World Junior Hockey Championships in 2023, which was taken away from Russia, have asked Canada if they can host the tournament.

Now, I believe they are also talking to other countries, but I believe Canada is a preferred destination. Hockey Canada meets about this next week. The IIHF will expect some type of decision by the end of April. If Hockey Canada does say okay, look for them to look at a destination in either Ontario or somewhere a little bit more East, maybe in the Maritimes." Marek said.

If Canada does say yes to hosting the 2023 World Juniors, it will be three consecutive tournaments that they have been in the country. The 2021 tournament was held in a bubble in Edmonton, the 2022 tournament was held in Edmonton and Red Deer before being cancelled and will be played in Edmonton solely in August.

Some potential locations Hockey Canada could look at are:

- Hamilton (First Ontario Centre, holds 17,383)/London (Budweiser Gardens, holds 9,100)
- Halifax (Scotiabank Centre, holds 11,093)/Moncton (Avenir Centre, holds 8,800)
- Quebec City (Centre Vidéotron, 18,259)
