Russia's invasion of Ukraine is about to cost them heavily in the hockey world.

According to Iltalehti, a Finnish-based media outlet, the International Ice Hockey Federation is suspending Russia and Belarus for the 2022 Men's World Championship in May. Russia also expected to be stripped of hosting duties for the 2023 World Juniors, as well as the 2023 Men's World Hockey Championship.

"According to information received from Iltalehti's insiders, the International Hockey Federation IIHF is separating Russia, which has invaded Ukraine, and Belarus, which supports the Russian invasion, from membership.

The meeting of the IIHF's board will start at 19.00 Finnish time, but according to insider sources, it is already clear what kind of decision the meeting will make.

According to Iltalehti sources, the IIHF has already prepared a bulletin on the separation of Russia and Belarus. According to insiders, Russia will also lose the World Championships for under-20s at the turn of next year, as well as the 2023 World Championships for men awarded to St. Petersburg.

To bring the total of teams back to 16, Austria will replace Russia in Group A, while France will replace Belarus in Group B.

"According to information received by Iltalehti, Austria will replace Russia in Helsinki and France will take the place of Belarus in the Tampere block."

The tournament is set to take place in Helsinki and Tampere (Finland) in May, but Helsinki may drop out as a host because their arena is currently owned by Russian billionaire businessman, Gennady Timchenko. Helsinki Ice Hall is expected to be the replacement arena.

"The Helsinki World Cup matches were to be played at the Hartwall Arena, but according to Iltalehti, the games will be moved out of the hall partly owned by Roman Rotenberg and Gennadi Timtshenko.

According to information received by Iltalehti, the new race hall will be Helsinki's old ice rink on Nordenskiöldinkatu. The World Cup is so close that it is no longer possible to change Helsinki to Turku."

Following an meeting of the International Olympics Committee's Executive Board, they have recommended that international sport organizations not allow athletes and officials from Belarus or Russia to participate at their events.

"In order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and the safety of all participants, the IOC Executive Board recommends that international sports federations and event organizers not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, as well as officials. Citizens of Russia or Belarus, whether individuals or teams, should only be accepted as neutral athletes or neutral teams,» the organization said in a statement."
