Johan Garpenlov, who played more than 600 games in the NHL and is now a head coach with Sweden's national men's hockey team, is taking a stand. Garpenlov says there's no way he's participating in any games at the international level that include Russia in any way.

"I will not stand in that type of match and coach a Swedish team against a Russian national team," Garpenlov told Expressen.se.

This may end up being a moot point as the International Ice Hockey Federation is set to meet on Monday, and there is plenty of speculation that Russia will be suspended from the organization and that the 2023 World Hockey Championships and the World Junior Championships will be pulled from the country over its declaration of war against Ukraine. So far, hockey federations in Switzerland, Latvia and Finland have openly declared their support for suspending Russia from the IIHF, while reports state other federations feel the same way.

"We in Swedish ice hockey take the terrible situation in Ukraine very seriously and we sympathize with the Ukrainian people. In terms of hockey, we work actively to find common decisions and approaches together with other national federations and the IIHF," said Anders Larsson, chair of the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation.

Garpenlov enjoyed a lengthy career in the NHL, playing for the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers and Atlanta Thrashers before ending his playing career in his home country. He has been the head coach of the Swedish men's national team since the 2019–2020 season, but had previously announced he will leave the position after this one.
