The Chicago Blackhawks hosted the New Jersey Devils on Friday night in what turned out to be a goal scoring fest. Chicago went on to win by a score of 8-5, courtesy of a pair of hat-tricks from Patrick Kane and Brandon Hagel.

Late in the third period, Hagel was going into New Jersey's zone on an empty net, when Devils defenceman P.K. Subban comes in from behind and purposely hacks at the blades of Hagel's skates, causing him to trip and fall. Hagel scored the goal while laying on the ice, and then slid into the net.

The trip drew a crowd afterwards, with Hagel and Subban eventually trying to fight each other, but the officials got between them.

Subban was set to receive a penalty for the trip, which would have resulted in a goal given because of the empty net, but Hagel scored, negating that call. For the scrum afterwards, Subban was given four minutes for roughing and a ten minute misconduct, while Hagel was given two minutes for roughing.

After the game, Hagel was asked about Subban's trip on him and he didn't mince his words.

"There's a reason, the guy slew-foots everybody, gets those fines. Just a dirty play."

Subban has been fined twice this season for dangerous trips, both instances game within a week of each other in late October/early November.

Hagel, 23, is having a solid sophomore season for the Blackhawks. In 47 games, he's recorded 30 point (17 G, 13 A), 21 penalty minutes and is a -13. Friday night's contest marked two important milestones for Hagel, his 100th career NHL game and his first career hat-trick.

In recent weeks, Hagel's name has been thrown around in trade rumours, with the NHL's deadline only 23 days away. In his post-game press conference, those rumours were brought up, jokingly, but Hagel had a pretty funny response to the question he was asked.

"You think with this hat-trick, the price goes up to two first round picks?" Hagel was asked. He responded with, "Yeah, two firsts, a couple prospects. McDavid, maybe, I don't know."
