On Monday, the largest fan group for Jokerit Helsinki, Eteläpääty, is demanding that the team leave the KHL immediately citing the Russia-Ukraine crisis as their reasoning.
"The continuation of Jokerit games will cause immeasurable damage to the entire club, which may never be repaired again," Eteläpääty said.
"It's really hard that it's been gone so far. As we said in the press release, we see that this continuation of games could have a big and long-lasting impact on the Jokerit brand. However, the Jokers is perhaps the biggest sports brand in this country. I think it is the duty of our fans to cherish it," they added.
Eteläpääty may not be able to see their demands met. Jokerit Helsinki is partially owned (40%) by a Russian company, Norilsk Nickel, so there's a very high possibility that they will reject these demands.
Jokerit Helsinki joined the Kontinental Hockey League in 2014 after spending nearly forty years in Finland's SM-Liiga.
The team has since released a statement regarding the request from the fan group.
"Jokerit has binding agreements and an obligation to comply with them in the KHL. The Jokers are also responsible as an employer. Since at the same time the situation is extremely difficult, we do not believe that Jokerit as a sports club has every right to clearly state its views on the situation.
At the moment, we are closely monitoring the situation and are engaged in an active dialogue with all interested parties. We will also closely monitor decisions related to possible sanctions and will monitor their implementation in our actions."
