During an appearance on 'The Fan Morning Show' on Sportsnet 590 radio in Toronto, former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin said that he's quite optimistic about the current team and believes that they can win the Stanley Cup.

"I wouldn't trade the core of the Toronto Maple Leafs for any other core around the league. They're going to have chances to win a championship ... I'm very, very optimistic about what management of the Leafs has done to build this young core of players ... It's coming," Sundin said.

The Maple Leafs currently sit third in the Atlantic Division with a record of 31-12-3 through 46 games. General manager Kyle Dubas will be busy leading up to the trade deadline on Monday, March 21st, trying to add to his roster, specifically on the blueline.

Two names that could be of interest to Maple Leafs management is Ben Chiarot of the Montreal Canadiens and Justin Braun of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Given the rivalry between the two teams, it's not often you see Montreal and Toronto come together as trade partners. In fact, it's only happened twice in the last fourteen years. In 2018, Montreal traded long-time centerman Tomas Plekanec to Toronto and in 2008, the Canadiens shipped Mikhail Grabovski to the Maple Leafs.

Toronto has the depth on forwards and goaltending to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs this season, but adding a defensive defenceman will be a must as the team enters the stretch run.
