The NHL can be a cruel business, and that was proved on Wednesday when the Edmonton Oilers announced they were sending Stuart Skinner to the American Hockey League (AHL), just days after his first NHL shutout.

Skinner, 23, fell victim to a numbers game as Mikko Koskinen was activated from the COVID-19 protocol list. It is unfortunate for the young netminder, who has been the best option the Oilers have had between the pipes this season with a 2.62 goals against average (GAA) along with a .913 save percentage (SV%) in 13 games.

With the move, Skinner will return to the Bakersfield Condors. In 10 games at the AHL level this season, Skinner owns a spectacular 1.97 GAA along with a .928 SV%. Despite the recent demotion, his future remains very bright, and he in no time could become the starting netminder for this Oilers squad.
